Dr Claire Lowry

Sentient Veterinary Member

Claire is from Melbourne, and completed her BVSc at the University of Melbourne in 2005.

Her love for animals started very early on in life, when she quoted at the grand age of four years old that she wanted to be a vet.

Claire volunteered at the RSPCA when she was 15 until she finished high school. She also organised fundraisers for the RSPCA when she was in high school to help fund surgical procedures for animals that were inspectorate cases and due to be euthanased. She fostered four dogs and nine cats during this time, and then began studying Veterinary Science.

After Claire graduated, she started working at a busy mixed animal practice. It was here that she gained further insight into animal welfare issues, particularly those involving farm animals.

Claire then moved to small animal practice in the inner eastern suburbs of Melbourne, where she has now worked for 12 years. She has formulated wildlife and inpatient care protocols for her practice, and is involved in the care of stray animals and rehousing of relinquished animals. Claire volunteered at Animals Fiji, Nadi, in 2013 when she took part in a rural desexing program and treated the many shelter animals. This is where she fell in love with a Fijian street dog called Red so flew her back to Australia with her! Claire also is mum to a black cat, Jack, who was brought in to her clinic as a stray kitten with a broken tail a few years ago.

Although Claire is currently working in small animal practice, her biggest passion is in education regarding animal welfare issues of production animals. She hopes to become more involved with production animal welfare by being a member of Sentient, and contributing to submissions.
